The New Ghetto by Theodor Herzl -
A play that created a state.
Not many know that the visionary of the Jewish state, Theodor Herzl, was a famous playwright whose plays were produced in Vienna, Prague and Berlin. He wrote alone or in collaboration with others about 15 plays, most of which were light-hearted comedies.
We are now presenting a staged reading of The new ghetto, which is Herzl's only play, dealing with a Jewish subject that, surprisingly, has not yet been performed in Israel. Herzl wrote The new ghetto at 1894 in an amazing 17-day creative burst and it seems that the writing of the play The New Ghetto and not the Dreyfus trial (as is commonly thought) is what caused Herzl's conception of the Jewish problem to change. In 1894 Herzl believed that the solution to the Jewish problem was the assimilation of the Jewish people into the society around them, but immediately after writing the new ghetto play Herzl wrote his founding story The State of the Jews in which he proposed the revolutionary idea of returning Jews to their historical homeland. It seems that the writing of the play acted on Herzl as a kind of psychodramatic process that allowed him to recognize the fact that assimilation is not the solution to the problem of the Jewish people but that the right way to deal with the situation is that the Jewish people should take their fate into their own homeland.
We present the play in the form of a staged reading as part of a reading theater program that has been operating for 4 years at the Micro Theater at the Jerusalem Theater.
The play takes place in Vienna at the end of the 19th century.
The play was translated into Hebrew by Yehuda and Sarah Moraly, and into French by Yehuda Moraly and Michele Fingher.
